Mad River Canoe takes its name from the Mad River, a north-flowing river in the state of Vermont. Mad River Canoe was founded in 1971 by Jim and Kay Henry, both accomplished canoeists and kayakers who shared a passion for wilderness tripping and whitewater racing. It was in their woodshed in Waitsfield, Vermont that the first Mad River Canoe was born out of a need for a higher performance, more durable canoe than was currently available. Jim Henry paddled this original canoe, named the Malecite, to his first of many national whitewater championships.

Explorer 14 TT

As with all Explorers, the Explorer 14 TT (formerly known as the St. Croix) offers predictable rough water performance mated to superior tracking for a short canoe and provides plenty of room for gear. With the 14 TT, you get all this capability at a surprisingly low price.

Just as the name suggests, this is a more compact version of our popular Explorer 16 RX, and shares that design's capability and mixed-water performance. Its shorter length makes it a more responsive tandem than the 16, great for twisty rivers or threading your way down a rock garden.

If you are looking for classic Explorer performance but are on a budget the canoe for you could well be the Explorer 16 TT (formerly know at the Teton). With almost identical lines to the classic Royalex edition, the Triple Tough Explorer 16 offers great stability in rough conditions, handles well loaded and tracks well.

If you like the seaworthiness and secondary stability of the Explorer design but demand the paddling efficiency and portability of a stiff lightweight canoe then the Explorer 16 in Kevlar Expedition composite is for you.
